Manuscript critique

A manuscript critique (also known as a manuscript assessment) reviews the strengths of your story as well as areas for improvement. Instead of nitpicking grammar and spelling, it zooms out to look at the big picture—your plot, characters, pacing, structure, and setting.

What you get:

Inline commentary

Notes on specific parts of your manuscript using the comments function in your document.

Editorial letter

A multi-page report detailing the strengths of your manuscript as well as areas for improvement.

Action steps

A list of suggested next steps addressing the most critical concerns in your manuscript.

Do you need a manuscript critique?

You should consider getting a manuscript critique if:

  • You have written a completed manuscript, but you’re not confident that your story is as strong as it could be, and you want some fresh insight.
  • You want to make sure your overall story is solid before getting into the nitty-gritty of sentence-level editing.
  • You want feedback that is aligned with mainstream audience expectations for your genre.
  • You are prepared to take advice on board and rewrite parts of your story.

A manuscript critique may not be a good fit for you if:

  • You just want to know whether you should proceed with your story or scrap it.
  • You are writing your story for yourself or for friends/family rather than trying to meet the reader expectations of a genre.
  • You are not prepared to make any changes to your manuscript.
  • You want feedback and guidance through multiple rounds of revisions, over an extended period of time.
